My best friend eloped this weekend. I’ve never been a bridesmaid, so when she asked me to be her witness I decided that this made me her unofficial maid of honor. This may have been a bit presumptuous of me but screw it; if I was ever going to be in a wedding party it would be hers. I took this unofficial, self-declared maid of honor role seriously (I think it’s fair to say that I can be a little “extra”) and went straight into planning mode. What dress would she wear? What kind of food would we serve? Would she let me throw confetti when they said I do? (I was kidding – kinda.) The answer to everything was a hard no; no confetti, no elaborate meal, no dress. She would order pizza and wear her favourite Lululemon leggings and anyone who didn’t like it could go fuck themselves (bad ass, I know). She DID however give me carte-blanche when it came to dessert and alcohol which is great considering I’m good at providing and consuming both of those things. In the end, I went with a three tier Oreo cake and an industrial quantity of white wine sangria (no lie, I mixed five liters worth for three people). While they weren’t exactly traditional choices, nothing about this wedding was traditional and I love them for it. Their big day was exactly what it should be; a simple celebration of two people who love each other. Even without confetti, I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon.

Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 bottles of 750ml white wine (preferably pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc)
- 1 cup vodka
- 1/3 cup Grand Marnier
- 2 cups Lime Perrier
- Grape fruit, sliced
- Lime, sliced
- Orange, sliced
- Mint for garnish
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Pour everything, including sliced fruit, into a large beverage dispenser (we used THIS).
- Stir and refrigerate. If wine and Perrier weren’t cold prior to mixing, add ice to glasses before serving.
- Enjoy!
