Travel plans may be on a standstill, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get away. A few weekends ago, Destination Restigouche sent me to the neighboring community of Charlo, NB, for some winter fun. Our region is incredibly blessed with an abundance of winter activities for all ages and I'm always happy when I have had the opportunity to enjoy them. If you love scenic landscapes, nature-based activities, tasty food and lovely people, I recommend adding Charlo to your list of destinations!
I brought my eldest daughter along to snowshoe at Les Aventuriers de Charlo and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Les Aventuriers offers a variety of winter sports such as cross-country skiing, biathlons, and Nordic pole walking, as well as outdoor training sessions. Their location is perfect for those who enjoy nature and the main lodge is a cozy spot to enjoy a warm beverage (like Hot Chocolate Bombs by Croissant Delice).
If you needed an excuse to visit Charlo, look no further: Atelier Gourmand is where it's at. Honestly, their handcrafted pizzas are the stuff dreams are made of. While they offer the traditional topping options that we all know and love such as works, all meat and pepperoni and cheese, Atelier Gourmand also offers many unique combinations. We had the opportunity to try their prosciutto pizza, which is topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Gorgonzola, N-Bee honey caramelized pears and prosciutto and it was out of this world! Also, the MVP of the evening for me was their shrimp garlic fingers. If you’re a fan of seafood, it is not to be missed!
A day out and about is great, but a night in with a cozy fireplace and view of the Chaleur Bay is the cherry on the sundae. The Heron’s Nest is open year round and has direct access to the snowmobiling trails. Their cottages offer vacationers a panoramic view of the Chaleur Bay, Gaspé coast and Appalachian mountain range (which is stunning in the winter as much as it is in the summer). They have three styles of cottage available that can accommodate 4 to 8 people, my personal favourite being the two storey, three bedroom cottage since it includes a second storey balcony.
