What do you do when you’ve bought a bunch of pears and your kids refuse to eat them? Pear Gin Fizz, amigos. While it won’t fix the issue of your kids being fussy eaters, it will provide a both beautiful and tasty drink and that’s almost just as good. I also love gin, and if you’re a fellow gin lover, this cocktail is for you. The sweet pear syrup combined with the pine-tree-like flavour of the alcohol make me more than a little happy (though probably not as happy as I’d be if my kids agreed to eat their fruits and vegetables without a mental breakdown – but small wins people).

Here’s what you’ll need:
For the pear syrup:
- 1 cup blended pears (any variety – though I used bartlett)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup water
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
For the cocktail:
- 2 oz gin
- 2 oz pear syrup
- 1 cup carbonated water
- 1 tsp granulated sugar, for rim
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon, for rim
- Pear, thinly sliced
- Sprig of thyme, to garnish
Here’s what you’ll do:
- For the pear syrup, chop 1 cup of pears then place in food processor and blend. In a small sauce pan, combine blended pears, sugar, water and vanilla. Over medium heat, bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until liquid becomes amber colour. Remove from heat and strain syrup into a jar. Discard pear solids. Allow syrup to cool completely before use.
- For the cocktail, in a shallow bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Wet the rim of an 8oz glass with water then dip in cinnamon sugar mixture. Add gin and pear syrup glass and stir. Add 1 slice of pear. Fill glass with ice, add carbonated water and stir. Garnish with thyme if desired.
